Ricoh Malaysia and HELP University College set up the first“InnoTech Centre” in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia, 4 December 2008 – Ricoh, a leading document solutions provider,
announced a significant partnership with HELP University College to jointly develop
a one-stop printing centre called the “InnoTech Centre” at the latter’s Bukit
Damansara campus in Kuala Lumpur.
The centre is poised to become an “incubator” centre for digital office technology and
a one-stop print centre that serves the needs of HELP students as well as the
surrounding business community. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was inked
between Ricoh (M) Sdn Bhd’s Managing Director Lim Eng Weng and HELP
University College’s President Datuk Dr. Paul Chan at an official signing ceremony
held at HELP’s Pusat Bandar Damansara auditorium.
“The creation of InnoTech Centre is borne out of both organizations’ commitment to
create excellence and harness synergy in our respective fields. Effective use of digital
office technology will enhance the delivery process of education and improve
learning. In addition, undergraduates will be well exposed to the latest digital print
technology and solutions before they join the workforce,” said Lim Eng Weng,
Managing Director of Ricoh Malaysia.
The new state-of-the-art InnoTech Centre, scheduled for completion in the first
quarter of 2009 at an estimated cost of approximately RM1 million, will provide all
HELP students a modern “print lounge” facility that showcases Ricoh’s cutting-edge
digital office technologies and document management solutions. The centre is also
expected to provide “on demand” printing and document creation and management
services to the surrounding business and neighbourhood community.
Meanwhile, the HELP Group will also be using Ricoh’s printing solutions in all its
campuses, especially at the Subang 2 Green Technology Campus. The new printing
technology from Ricoh, which is environmentally friendly, will enhance efficiency
and productivity at HELP as it is wireless and accessible from everywhere.
This collaboration will also cut costs for the HELP Group by approximately
RM20,000 a month. This is significant in view of the present recession and high
energy cost. HELP is committed to playing a part in ensuring that resources are used
efficiently and with care.
More importantly, the collaboration provides the HELP Group in rationalising their
management using state-of-the-art management techniques of Ricoh.
“HELP is very excited to be working with Ricoh on this project. We will also be
conducting various training programmes with Ricoh to teach the public different
printing technologies and Information Security Management System (ISMS)
programmes,” said Datuk Dr. Paul Chan, President and co-Founder of HELP
University College. “These InnoTech Centres are part of the diversification strategy
for both HELP and Ricoh to offer something unique to the public and to seek revenue
from different areas. By utilizing Ricoh’s advanced printing technology, it will also be
an incubator for innovation and entrepreneurial activities especially related to
publishing.”
Both organizations hailed the “InnoTech Centre” as a start of a new level of
collaboration and partnership.

UMP up grades IT app lic ations system

Un i v e r s i t i M a l a y s i a P a h a n g (UMP) has r e c e n t l y upgraded its Oracle 11gR2 database and the information infrastructure applications system, Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC), in line with the university’s requirements to enhance its information technology (IT) capability and ensure its long-term viability and effectiveness. The upgraded facility will not only benefit the university’s 7,000-strong scholarly community, but also the general public and prospective students, allowing them a simpler and quicker access to UMP’s website. According to the Vice- Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Daing Nasir Daing Ibrahim, other than the database and applications system, the upgrading project would also involve hardware improvement, i.e. replacing old equipment with new ones. Since 2003, UMP has put into practice an Integrated Management System (IMS) in its operations, employing e-Community applications like FinancialIMS, Human Resources IMS and academic portals. “The implementation of a wide range of IT applications system has resulted in increased productivity and time-savings in our delivery system and services,” said Professor Dato’ Dr Daing Nasir at a document exchange ceremony with Oracle Corporation Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. at the university’s Chancellory Banquet Hall on April 15. At the ceremony, Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Academic & International), Professor Dr Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz, and Acting Director of the Centre of Information & Communications Technology, Roslan Awang Abdul Rahman, received upgrading certification documents from Professor Dato’ Dr Daing Nasir for Academic IMS and e-Community application, respectively. First Tourism Club for MMU

MALACCA: The country's first ministry-endorsed Tourism Club will be established by the Multimedia University (MMU) at its Malacca campus to promote tourism. Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the 12-year-old university was an ideal choice for such a club to be initiated based on its strategic location in Malacca, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Students who are taking up courses in creative multimedia and information technology at MMU could help promote tourism using the digital and multimedia platforms, she told reporters after launching the 15th Chinese New Year Extravaganza organised by MMU's Chinese Language Society in Bukit Beruang on Thursday night. Dr Ng said the club would initially function as a source of information on the uniqueness of Malaysia's tourist attractions to the estimated 2,000 international students studying at the Malacca campus. She also pledged RM10,000 as set-up fund for the club to implement its activities. “The ministry will also assist the club, including training members who are keen to become part-time tour guides,” she added. MMU president Prof Datuk Dr Muhamad Rasat Muhamad said Dr Ng's initiative was welcomed by the university. “We have more than 70 clubs initiated by students in MMU Malacca and I am sure there will be those thrilled with the idea and have what it takes to make this club a success. “The combination of tourism with creative multimedia is interesting and will be an eye-opener for the students,” he added. Meanwhile, Dr Ng refuted claims that many Wanita MCA members were leaving the party. She said such claims were not true at all and not even mentioned during the party's central committee meeting a day earlier. “I can say confidently that no one has left Wanita MCA.”

YTL Communications to Provide 4G Mobile Internet Network to UKM

BANGI, 6 June, 2011 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) hopes the problems it faces over its internet connections within the campus is a thing of the past with YTL Comunications providing 4G mobile internet network infrastructure. The 4G mobile internet network infrastructure to be provided by YTL Communications allows for the fastest wireless internet broadband for UKM staff and students. This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between UKM and YTL Communications last Friday. UKM has been facing two major problems over its internet connections within the campus over its rising internet network storage and single point failures. “Apart from taking over the UKM’s online storage burden, the 4G network will become the alternative line to avoid single point of failure in the UKM,” said Executive Director of YTL Comunications, Yasmin Mahmood at the signing. The MoU was signed the by Vice-Chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin and Yasmin. The cooperation between them will be in the form of Education’s Partner Programme (EPP) which is a service provided by YTL to enable campus members to access internet anywhere and anytime. Campus members will enjoy 4G mobile internet network service and voice call at any of the university’s campuses in Bangi, Cheras or Kuala Lumpur at high speed but reasonably fair rate. The cooperation also promise various offers to UKM students which are free 300 MB of data or 100 minutes of calls or 100 SMS (equilavent to RM 9) per month. “By having the YTL 4G Program, UKM was hoping to build a more progressive learning environment that will nurture a powerful generation that can generate knowledge at their fingertips. “This is the aim of the National Broadband Initiative aimed at making Malaysia a knowledge society so as to realise the goal of becoming a high income nation by 2020,” said Prof Sharifah Hapsah at the signing ceremony. It was attended by senior UKM staff and Director of the UKM’s Information Technology Centre, Associate Professor Dr. Mohamad Shanuddin Zakaria.

USE TECHNOLOGY TO SEEK KNOWLEDGE- USM

Penang, 31 May: Developments in communications and information technology have brought about changes to society and university students, specifically those in distance education. This group of people should use technology in seeking knowledge. According to the Acting Vice-Chancellor of USM, Assoc. Prof. Omar bin Osman, technological developments have created societies that are information-based that will enable them to compete globally. “However, all knowledge available at the finger tips will not be of use if students do not strive to master the technology. The ability to master technology such as the Internet will give students the competitive edge and ensure that they are not left behind in their pursuit of knowledge,” he said at the Distance Education Students Welcoming Ceremony in conjunction with the Distance Education Orientation Week from 28 May to 1 June 2007. He said that USM has taken the initiative to enhance the e-Learning portal of the School of Education, USM, hence, students are able to attend video conferencing sessions anywhere. “Commencing this Academic Session, students who face difficulty in attending lectures at the district centres of the School of Distance Education can follow the video conference and download lecture videos if they have Internet lines.” “Based on the study related to the initiative and feedback from students, we believe that this will greatly benefit students. We are also looking into the technology that will enable students to interact with their lecturers during video sessions which we hope to implement in the near future,” he said. Through the School of Distance Education e-Learning portal, students can access additional notes, assignment questions, sel-access learning modules and others available at http://el.usm.my/pppjj/. For the 2007/2008 Academic Session, 1,732 students from all over the country will pursue their Bachelor of Arts [Humanities], Bachelor of Social Sciences, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Management degrees. From this total, 53 students will undergo the orientation programme at Maktab Sabah, Kota Kinabalu from 5 June and 74 students will undergo this progmme at the Kolej Datu Patinggi Abang Hj. Abdillah, Petra Jaya, Sarawak. USM also accepted 26 senior citizens and 32 students with different abilities. DISABILITY AND AGE NO BARRIER IN STUDIES Penang, 31 May 2007: If there's a will, there's a way. Believing in this saying, 32 students with different ability and 26 senior citizens made a vow to continue their studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to fulfil their dreams of earning a degree. These students registered for the university's Distance Education Programme on 28 may 2007. Among them, Norhayati binti Mohd. Yusoff, 27, a polio victim at the age of 13, said that she was determined to take up the challenge to further her studies at the university. “I dropped out in Form 1. But I realised that importance of knowledge and I continued to study from home on my own. After completing my SPM in 2003 and STPM in 2006, I applied to continue my studies at USM.” “I believe that I can overcome all obstacles with a strong will. My family members and close friends have always been supportive and they've encouraged me to continue my studies. Their support and encouragement will strengthen me in my journey which I believe will be an uphill struggle,” she said. She's pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Arts. As for senior citizen, Hj. Ahmad bin Eunos, 62, he will be achieve him aim of continuing his studies as he's offered the Bachelor of Social Sciences programme. He retired in 1998 as the Deputy Commissioner of Commerce at the Foreign Ministy in South Africa. He holds a Diploma in Law. “I've always wanted to continue my studies but had had to postpone my plans due to work commitments. And now, I'm able to achieve my plan despite my age.” “I think USM's effort in providing senior citizens with the opportunities to further their studies is commendable. With the initiatives such as reduced fees and a conducive environment, I see no reason why senior citizens like me should reject the offer to continue our studies,” he said. Another senior citizen student, K. Jayalakshme, 58, describes the opportunity as the university's recognition of their work experience. He was a teacher. According to him, developments in technological have enabled everyone in all levels of society to continue their studies and this opportunity should be put to good use. “I believe that age is not barrier in pursuing a degree. USM, for instance, has provided vast opportunities through its e-Learning Portal for its students in their pursuit of knowledge. If there's a will, age is not a barrier,” he said.

UPM and UM Enhance Learning Facilities and Empower Student Lives with 4G Mobile Internet

Kuala Lumpur, 13 September 2010 – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Malaya (UM) today joined the Education Partner Program (EPP) spearheaded by YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL Comms). Under the program, both universities will apply the power of 4G Mobile Internet campus-wide to give their students cutting-edge learning facilities and further enhance the quality of life on campus for both students and academic staff. UM plans to utilise YTL's 4G Campus-wide Network to boost research activities and be among the top 100 universities in the world UM plans to utilise YTL's 4G Campus-wide Network to boost research activities and be among the top 100 universities in the world UPM and UM are the third and fourth local university respectively to join the EPP program in the last two months after UTM and UTAR. All twenty of Malaysia’s public universities and selected private universities are expected to join the program by the end of the year. “We want the students to access our enterprise, learning and research services from anywhere and at anytime and therefore we are pleased to partner with YTL Comms to give our students the freedom and the convenience of 4G Mobile Internet,” said Professor Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah, Vice Chancellor of UPM. “We champion the model of Ubiquitous Learning at UPM. This means learning whatever, whenever, wherever. We call it www-learning, which is, incidentally, the way the real Internet should be, too”, said Associate Professor Dr. Suhaimi Napis, CTO and Director, InfoComm Development Centre (iDEC), UPM. The Ubiquitous Learning Environment (ULE) at UPM, the brainchild of Dr. Suhaimi, relies on the Malaysian Research and Education Network (MYREN), a high-capacity broadband network that connects universities, colleges, research organisations and scientific laboratories. UPM was one of the founding proposers of this dedicated network that provides a platform for creating research communities and encourages them to exchange ideas and collaborate with international partners. YTL's 4G Campus-wide Network is set to take UPM's model of Ubiquitous Learning Environment (ULE) even further YTL's 4G Campus-wide Network is set to take UPM's model of Ubiquitous Learning Environment (ULE) even further While UPM’s ubiquitous learning model relies on MYREN as the foundation, the university also has a number of cloud services that can support blended learning – a mixture of remote and on-premise education. For example, the video collaboration services, 1VideoBridge, make live virtual classes possible, with up to 160 laptops, desktops and other compatible devices connected at one time, where students can interact with the lecturer and each other. We also have uCast, modelled after a popular video-sharing portal to facilitate video-on-demand. “All this innovation that supports the ubiquitous learning model can’t be fully harnessed by the students without high speed Internet access that is available everywhere and from any device,” said Dr. Suhaimi. “The power of 4G Mobile Internet will create new ways for education to be delivered and we are already working with YTL Comms to enable interoperability between our learning and research cloud services and all platforms, including new Android-based devices, which we are eager to explore.” He added. Under the EPP partnership, each student will receive FREE converged data and voice services of 300 megabytes per user, on a monthly basis over a period of 3 years at anytime and from anywhere throughout the campus grounds. On top of that, the students will be able to top up their accounts at special student rates. “UM is currently rated the top ranking university in Malaysia, but it is our mission to see UM among the top 100 universities in the world in the next five years. Our partnership with YTL Comms and participation in the EPP program is a major milestone towards realising this vision,” said Datuk Dr. Ghauth Jasmon, Vice Chancellor of UM. UM sees 4G Mobile Internet as a perfect tool to enhance students’ lives on campus, too. “The combination of 4G Broadband & Voice service under one account is a great value proposition to our students. When every ringgit needs to be stretched, it helps that our students can use their 300 megabytes of free broadband to make free phone calls, too. Considering that the majority of their calls are made to friends and colleagues on campus, the savings they will be able to realize are substantial,” elaborated Dr. David Asirvatham, Director, Center for Information Technology, UM. UM is Malaysia’s first public university and a Research University, as designated by the Government. As such, UM actively spearheads a number of research-intensive projects in ICT and Computational Sciences, Biotechnology and Bioproducts, and Health and Translational Medicine in which it applies the power of Grid Computing. However, due to the current bandwidth limitations, the Grid Computing can only extend to the servers at the time being. “With the superior performance of 4G, that delivers connectivity in megabits instead of the kilobits we currently get with 3G, the power of grid computing can easily extend all the way to desktops and devices, too, significantly improving our research process,” added Dr. David. “We are very impressed with UPM’s and UM’s vision to create superior academic environments and we are extremely pleased to be their partner in realising this vision,” said Yasmin Mahmood, Executive Director, YTL Communications. “We are building a better Internet for everyone, a 4G Mobile Internet network that truly empowers all people, and we want our students, the leaders of a better tomorrow, to be the first to experience this most advanced Internet technology available today.”
