Censor your own movies next year

PUTRAJAYA: Starting next year, local movie producers will be allowed to carry out their own censorship on movies and dramas they produced, Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said yesterday.

He said the Film Censorship Board and the Film Censorship Control and Enforcement Department would play an advisory role.

"They will censor and classify their own productions and evaluate whether the movies can be aired or not.

"They are fully responsible for the screening and censoring of scenes deemed offensive or have sexual content.

"We will advise and observe," he said after opening the New Directions on Control and Film Censorship seminar here yesterday.

Mahmood said the move was to give more leeway for local film producers and not stifle the film industry.

He said local producers were mature enough to decide what should and should not be aired.

"The ministry will not block any production unless the guidelines are not followed.

"We would like to see this as a transformation and collaboration between the government and players to enhance the film industry."
